Although fans were sad to see an abrupt ending to Big Brother Canada 8 last year due to the pandemic, Big Brother Canada is back, and boy, are we excited! Spoilers ahead for Episode 3 of Big Brother Canada 9! Watch the latest episode before reading on.

In last week’s season premiere, 14 HouseGuests moved into the Big Brother Canada 9 House to compete for the $100,000 prize. However, the season got off to an unexpected start when host Arisa Cox announced that the HouseGuests would get divided into two teams of seven.

On Team Defender, we have Breydon, Jedson, Josh, Julie, Kiefer, LaToya, and Rohan. On Team Destiny, we have Austin, Beth, Kyle, Tera, Tina, Tychon, and Victoria, with Kiefer and Tina acting as team captains.

The two sides immediately got pitted against each other as they fought for safety from the first eviction. After all was said and done, Team Destiny won themselves safety leaving the members of Team Defender, minus their team captain Kiefer, in jeopardy of eviction.

Although Josh seemed to be the easy first boot, Julie quickly gained a reputation for having loose-lips and ultimately found herself walking out the door by a vote of 11-2. So who won the first HOH of the season and who’d they choose as the first official nominees of Big Brother Canada 9?

Let’s get into it!

Big Brother Canada 9: The HOH hangs in the balance

The stakes were high for the first HOH competition of the season as Team Defender was determined to redeem themselves after losing last week’s safety competition. However, this task was easier said than done. For this week’s HOH competition, the HouseGuests had to balance a ball on the neck of a bow and arrow, adding more balls as the competition progressed.

The last player standing would be named HOH. Things got off to a rocky start for Team Defender as Kiefer, Josh, and Rohan were the first three members to get eliminated from the competition, leaving Team Destiny with a 5-3 advantage. After 51 minutes, the competition came down to Austin for Team Destiny and LaToya for Team Defender. Despite wanting to win the challenge for her team, LaToya felt that it was in her best interest to broker a deal with Austin.

As the women duked it out, Kiefer shouted words of encouragement to LaToya, trying to disrupt Austin’s focus in the process, a bold move from a man who admitted in the Diary Room (DR) that his game would be in danger if Austin won. However, his attempts were futile, and LaToyap eventually dropped, giving Austin the win and Team Destiny safety for the week.

Final twos, suspicions, and pitches

Following the HOH competition, Team Destiny celebrated in their bedroom. Meanwhile, Austin told us in the DR that she planned on using her HOH reign to have conversations and gain information that would help her make her decision.

Later Austin told Beth, who she confirmed in the DR, she has a Final Two deal with, she planned on making her nomination decisions last minute. Still, Austin bounced around potential nominees with Beth and Breydon, naming Latoya, Jedson, and Tychon as people she considers a threat.

However, the person most concerned for their safety was Kiefer, who told LaToya and Josh that he had a feeling he’d be going on the block. Although he’d shrug it off, Kiefer asked Josh to leave him alone, a not-so-great move in a situation where you need allies to keep yourself safe.

In the Backyard, Kyle and Rohan played pool. After Beth walked by, Rohan told Kyle that he is unable to read her. In the DR, he elaborated, saying Beth is a smart and outgoing player who hasn’t made it clear where her loyalties lie.

Kyle affirmed these suspicions, telling Rohan he believes Beth and Austin are really close. In the DR, he would say that he felt the need to watch out for Austin, who he also believes is untrustworthy on top of being a great competitor.

Back in the HOH Room, the campaigning began as Josh met with Austin. Austin, knowing he’d find himself on the block come the Nomination Ceremony, went into the meeting with Austin with the sole purpose of convincing her there are more appealing targets to send home over him. While she seemed receptive to his pitch, she didn’t assure him that he wouldn’t be one of her nominees.

Austin then met with Kiefer, who said that despite having not talked much game with her, he hoped to work with her moving forward and would suggest Rohan as a nominee, hoping that Josh was the intended target.

Finally, she’d met with Rohan, who believed Josh was throwing his name around. Interestingly, despite having not talked much game with him, Austin told Rohan he was not on her radar and she was interested in working with him in the future.

Unfortunately for Josh and Kiefer, this meant that they would find themselves sitting next to each other on the block come the Nomination Ceremony.
