NCIS Season 18, Episode 9 found the team enmeshed in the world of food trucks. They were working the case of a murdered Petty Officer named Martin Delfino. In addition to preparing to ship out, he has also been helping his cousin, Sean, with his popular food truck, Killer Korn.

There are no shortage of suspects to go through, especially upon finding out about a food truck war with another vendor, who stole the idea from Sean. And just when you thought this episode would just be good, lighthearted fun, they came out with a surprising and heartbreaking twist.

As well as working on the case, some members of the team were dealing with personal issues. Kasie has been anxiously waiting for word on her mom, who was hospitalized with chest pains.

She is agonizing over whether to go and gets some encouragement from Jimmy and Gibbs. In particular, Jimmy helps her to understand that even through dark times, there are moments where light can shine in.

NCIS Season 18, Episode 9 proves not all characters are safe

Gibbs is also helpful to Kasie as well, making sure she knows her family always comes first. She still manages to help find their murder weapon before getting good news from her sister.

Before the team can even finish things up, Gibbs gets an urgent call from Fornell. It appears Emily has a medical emergency and has been rushed to the hospital. Fornell, who had been talking earlier about making a move to Costa Rica after being inspired by Jack, is devastated to discover his daughter has relapsed.

Sadly, Emily succumbs to her addiction and passes away in this episode. It was absolutely gut wrenching and shocking. As McGee tells Jimmy in the episode, it is an unfortunate part of what happens with addiction.

During a touching montage, Vance reads a poem by Merritt Malloy that he received after the loss of his wife. He had given it to Jimmy and wants to give it to Fornell.

Saying goodbye to a beloved NCIS character

This shocking death is one we did not see coming. This is the second time in just a couple of episodes that we have mourned the loss of a beloved character. Especially being the daughter of Tobias Fornell, who fans have watched grow up during the series.

While it feels completely out of left field, it is a sad reality for those who struggle with addiction. It’s hard to overcome something that can take such a strong hold over you. Fans of the show will miss seeing Emily Fornell on their screens.
