In the latest episode of Superman and Lois, “The Best of Smallville,” the town celebrates their first Harvest Festival since the passing of beloved resident and mother of Clark, Martha Kent, who is seen in various flashbacks. Key memories seem to help Clark handle his challenges as a father of teen boys.

While Clark Kent may know a thing or two about farming, no one gathers a crop of corn from the field like Superman. Its like watching Pac Man devour his way through a maze. In addition, suppressed emotions stimulated by jealousy, pain and disappointment gets the better of Jonathan.

Memories of Martha

As Clark reminisces over his late mom Martha, we get to see a teenaged Clark going through growing pains in more ways than one, including clashes with her. Even back then he could not resist his crime fighting urges, slapping bullets away and hiding his identity behind a ski mask instead of a pair of ordinary eyeglasses. Go figure.

Still, Clark would later apply his life’s lessons to encourage son Jonathan, who is going through an ordeal of his own.

Jonathan has a meltdown

No, there is no joy in witnessing Jonathan having a semi-breakdown after his girlfriend breaks up with him over the phone or watch him stand by as Jordan unintentionally snatches football stardom and popularity away from him. After all, there’s only so much a brother can take. To top it all off, a jealous but tipsy Jonathan embarrasses Jordan in front of Sarah and his drinking pals and later runs into his parents who can smell the alcohol on his breath.

The boys are ordered to call a rideshare and go home. Jonathan replies they were going home anyway. Lois tells him to go faster. Gotta love her mama snarkiness.

Jonathan being Jonathan later apologizes to which Clark gives him some fatherly advice and a one-time warning. Hopefully, Jonathan will find new friends, real ones who aren’t bullies, and spend their time drinking and drugging.

Frenemy Captain Luthor returns

Having lost his alien ship, Luthor is back and tooling around in an RV. He shows up in Smallville because, as he puts it, wherever Lois goes Superman follows. Luthor tries to befriend Lois, claiming to be a reporter who is also investigating Morgan Edge.

Luthor is all over the place. He’s after Superman and kryptonite but is he really after Morgan Edge? Does Luthor know about Edge’s kryptonite stash? He did mention the mines. Oh, and he may be after Lois as well. More on that later. The man is full of surprises.

Fifty shades of suspicion

Sharon Powell is also back, along with her formerly missing son Derek who is suffering from faux amnesia and out-of-control heat vision abilities. Looks like this fiery phenomenon may keep fireman Kyle in business. No wonder he’s so burned out. No pun intended.

Testing out her investigative wings, Chrissy later sneakingly tracks Derek’s location through Sharon’s cell phone. Chrissy finds Derek kissing Leslie Larr who then takes him to some body scanning contraption to fix his over-zealous laser eyes.

Clark, overhearing Chrissy’s conversation with Lois, flies off as Superman and finds Derek and Leslie. Moments later, look up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s Superman and Derek. Yes, Derek can fly. A brief battle through the cornfields ensues but Derek, who feels like he is already dead anyway, gives up and literally toasts himself to death.

That Superman and Lois ending

Captain Luthor is just plain fixated and determined. No matter how many times his “Alexa” tries to tell him, he refuses to believe. First, she warned this Superman does not appear to be the same one from his earth. Now, we see Luthor flashing back to a scene where he and Lois are apparently a couple. What! Anyway, poor Alexa tells him that this Lois is not the same Lois either.

Next up, Jordan gets ambushed by Tag during his walk home. Wait. Did Tag escape from the DOD’s version of the X-Men’s boarding school for mutant adolescents? Tag wants to know what has Jordan done to him? So, did he hear Jordan telling Jonathan in the previous episode that he believes he caused Tag’s metahuman morphing? If so, did Tag also hear Jonathan say we need to call dad and suddenly Superman appears?
