After a week off, This Is Us returns with an all-new episode that teases an important conversation between Beth and Tess. Will this mother-daughter duo improve or worsen their relationship?

Before Beth and Tess talk it out, Uncle Nicky and his backstory took centerstage on the previous episode. Up until then, Uncle Nicky’s upbringing was very vague. The main detail we knew was his service in Vietnam and how a tragic event led to a schism with Jack.

In the episode, Uncle Nicky had a love life before Vietnam. Nicky fell in love with his coworker, Sally, as they shared a deep love for astrology and the Moon. Sally asked Nicky to come to Woodstock and then move to California. With Jack’s blessing, Nicky was set to move out of the house and hit the road with Sally until he backed out at the last minute. Nicky elected to stay home in order to protect his mother from his abusive father.

After Vietnam, we learned that Nicky could have met up with Jack one night outside of a bar. Just before Nicky called out Jack’s name, he hesitated and paused upon seeing the engagement ring Jack bought for Rebecca. In the present, Nicky arrived at Kevin’s house and promised his twins that he would be a major part of their lives going forward.

Tonight’s episode will intertwine multiple storylines. Beth and Tess will embark on a discussion about Tess’s girlfriend, Alex. Tess believes her mother doesn’t accept her new relationship while Beth just wants to understand and talk with Tess since their relationship is not as strong as it once was.

Meanwhile, the synopsis teases a new challenge for Kevin and Madison, which we can guess will involve Uncle Nicky. Also, Jack and Miguel strengthen their friendship in the past.
