It’s not a prerequisite for a cult classic TV show to be axed before its time, but it certainly creates the kind of sting that keeps the show in the pop culture consciousness despite not having too many episodes to binge. Firefly, the Joss Whedon sci-fi adventure drama, is a prime example of this phenomenon.

The show’s sole season, coming in at 14 episodes long, first aired in 2002. It’s been nearly 20 years, and the series is still being talked about. Why? Most likely because of how different the show was from anything on television at the time.

Space operas and westerns, as genres, are often opposed to one another. It can’t be helped. They draw on differing elements and have clashing aesthetics. Blending the two goes against the grain which can be jarring for some.

Drawing on iconography from the old West in a series set over 500 years in the future from the present day is risky. It can be hit or miss. For Firefly fans devoted to the found family that is the Serenity crew led by Captain Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his second-in-command Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres), it was a story that resonated. For critics, not so much.

The series also blended American and Chinese cultures as the two nations formed an alliance in the show’s universe. Firefly, however, was rightfully criticized for its stunning lack of Asian characters considering the alliance.

Bearing the above in mind, it’s understandable that the show isn’t for everyone but if you’d like to see why the series has lasted this long in the pop culture memory, Firefly can be streamed on Hulu.

Serenity, the show’s sequel film released in 2005, doesn’t currently have a streaming home. The movie, however, can be rented through Amazon Prime Video for $3.99 and purchased for $13.99.
