TGIT fans rejoice! Grey’s Anatomy will remain part of the lineup for the 2021–2022 season. Is Ellen Pompeo returning to Grey’s Anatomy Season 18?

Despite the show being the most-watched drama on ABC, the future of Grey’s Anatomy was on the line. There were a lot of questions about whether there was even going to be another season, many of them due to Ellen Pompeo previously suggesting that she was ready to step away from the series.

There is no Grey’s Anatomy without Pompeo. After all, the show has always been focused on her character, Meredith Grey. The name is in the title of the show.

Great news came in on May 10, though. TVLine confirms that Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 is officially happening.

Will Ellen Pompeo be part of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18?

Now the question about the leading lady. The renewal came in after Pompeo signed a contract for another year on the show. It is only a one-year renewal, which does mean that Season 18 now could be the last.

This is something everyone will want to keep an eye on. The writers will need to find a way to wrap up the long-running medical drama in a way that works for the majority of the audience—it’s never going to satisfy every single fan out there.

So far, only Jesse Williams is confirmed as stepping away from the series. He’s leaving in the May 20 episode, with the stepping stones for his exit already laid. There is a chance for Japril to happen off-screen in a way that there’s been a chance for Calzona to happen off-screen.

Krista Vernoff will remain showrunner of the series. She is also remaining showrunner of Station 19, which has also landed a renewal. Expect more crossovers between the two shows.
