Yaya DaCosta will be putting away her scrubs and hopping networks come the end of Chicago Med‘s sixth season on NBC. The actress, who’d been with the series since its debut in 2015, will be moving onto a leading role in the upcoming Karen Gist and Lee Daniels project, Our Kind of People.

The series, slated for Fox‘s 2021-2022 TV line-up, is Daniels’ third show for the network, but his first not focused on the music industry.

The departure from worlds like Empire and Star will be an interesting pivot for viewers used to the song-tinged glam and grime of Daniels’ television offerings.

However, Our Kind of People will still tread the familiar road of the rich and powerful, just in Martha’s Vineyard and not a record label.

What is Our Kind of People about?

The drama series, written by Gist and executive produced by Daniels, is based on the book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class by Lawrence Otis Graham.

According to Deadline, DaCosta will play Angela Vaughn, a single mother who is determined to reclaim her family name and make her own way with a haircare line devoted to the natural beauty of Black hair.

Aware of her estranged father’s wealth, Angela has never forgiven him for walking out on her and her mother Eve, leaving them to struggle when he could have helped.

At least, that’s how she’s understood what happened, however, when her mother passes things about her past start coming to light. It starts with a house Angela inherits in the Oak Bluffs community of Martha’s Vineyard.

The well-to-do area has been home to the wealthy Black elite for half a century. It’s a place where money and power reign supreme, and secrets hide in the shadows. Angela intends to open a shop and help her daughter Nikki find her footing in their new home, but women like socialite Leah Franklin Dupont are likely to make that difficult.

Angela, however, has never met a problem she hasn’t at least tried to fight.
