10. Blow

Original Release Date: April 6, 2001

Box Office Earnings: Blow was put together with $53 million and gathered $83.2 million worldwide. Do you remember watching this movie in theaters or were you too young?

Critical Acclaim: At Rotten TomatoesBlow has a critics score of 55% Rotten. Audiences, however, strongly disagree with a more positive 87%. Needless to say, despite the positive feedback from viewers, the movie did not receive any nominations.

What’s it about: Based on a true story and adapted from Bruce Portner’s book of the same name, Blow follows the life of George Jung aka El Americano, a cocaine trafficker and smuggler, portrayed her by Depp. He was a major player in the drug business from the 1970s and early 1980s. The movie recounts Jung’s childhood in Boston all the way to his downfall in the late 80s. Blow also stars Ray Liotta, Rachel Griffiths, Penelope Cruz, Jordi Molla, and others.

Simply the best: The movie may not have made a huge profit in theaters, but movie tickets were not as expensive back then as they are now. You’ll also find that Blow wasn’t appreciated when it premiered. Nowadays we seem to enjoy biographical crime dramas a lot more. While not half as clever as Netflix’s Narcos, Depp’s Blow is still a great movie that’s worth the watch. It’s exciting, packed with drama, and if you don’t know George Jung’s story you’ll enjoy the ride even more.
