9. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Original Release Date: May 22, 1998

Box Office Earnings: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was put together with a reported budget of $18.5 million. Unfortunately, the movie tanked at the box office. For starters, it didn’t premiere in international markets, so it only accumulated $10.6 million. That’s right, no profit at all, instead it was a loss.

Critical Acclaim: Despite receiving mixed reactions by both critics and fans (50% from critics and 89% from audiences), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas continues to land on Top 10 lists today when it comes to Johnny Depp movies.

What’s it about: In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Raoul (Depp) is a journalist, covering a story in Las Vegas, of all places, and has his lawyer Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) join in. What follows is a drug-fueled and trippy adventure where nothing is what it seems, at least not to Gonzo and Raoul.

Simply the best: From the beginning, it’s obvious Depp works best when he takes on kooky characters, and playing Raoul Duke is solid proof of it. As usual, Depp is a stand-out and brings this character to life. It’s bizarre, and not a movie for everyone, but if this sounds like something you would enjoy, definitely check it out!
