Just recently, I was dragged to the theater to watch the buddy comedy sequel Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Recently, we talked about unnecessary sequels and another easy addition to the list has got to be this one. It wasn’t bad and neither was The Hitman’s Bodyguard, but the thought never crossed my mind that this story was in need of continuation. Frankly, we need to really think hard about what films are actually sequel worthy and which would just be thrown to the list of worst movie sequels.

This has crossed my mind even more recently, after hearing about talks of The Tomorrow War getting a sequel and Army of the Dead getting a prequel. Had these films gone straight to the theaters instead of streaming services, they would not have been nearly as successful. People that use streaming services, a lot of times, watch out of boredom.

This couldn’t be more of the case when talking about these two generic action team-up films. Again, they weren’t bad. In fact, they were pretty fun, but sequel worthy? We’ve gotten way too ahead of ourselves to think that these films deserve small franchises. This isn’t just a dig at these random assortment of films but more of a question for film fans as a whole.

Will this trend continue? Has streaming inflated the numbers on what films are popular? With numerous streaming services already and more on the way, most of the services will try to build up their library of original films as companies come to claim unoriginal content. This is why Netflix has so many original films and shows now. It’s because Peacock took The Office and Disney took the rest.

The main issue at hand is that amount of sequels were getting just because a decent amount of people watched the first film. That seems to be the only reason at this point. Look at The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Though the film was a success, it wasn’t a smash-hit blockbuster or anything. It did well at best. I was actually dumbfounded when I heard they were making a second one.

Worst movie sequels: Was Ride Along sequel worthy?

Every actor involved has better projects to do elsewhere. To retread a semi-successful buddy comedy just felt like a waste of everyone involved. This has been happening more and more frequently as of late, and there’s no end in sight. As a film fan and consistent movie-goer, we need to really show these movies studios what we think is worthy of a sequel.

Is the film actually good or did you just want to watch something random before you go to bed? Sequels are a privilege and should be awarded to blockbusters or films that are so entertaining that they capture the imagination of millions. An average horror movie that barely made back its budget, but was cheap to make, shouldn’t be awarded such a privilege.

Ask yourself the important question: If it was only available in theaters, would you go out of your way to pay and watch it?
