Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 is now in production, ready for its September premiere date. The big question for many is whether this is going to be the last.

Production has started. There shouldn’t be a need for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 premiere to be delayed, which means we’re still looking at Thursday, Sept. 30.

The biggest question is whether this season is going to be the last. It’s a question we have every season now. After all, the renewal relies on one thing: Ellen Pompeo signing on for another season.

There’s always a chance she won’t want to sign on for another season. It depends on plans for the future, but Pompeo is doing things behind the scenes now. So, could we end up saying goodbye to Meredith and the rest of the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial this season?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 could be the last

If we’re honest, there is a chance that Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 will be the last. The show has graduated and is off to college after 18 seasons!

It felt a little like Season 17 was going to be the last. A lot of characters from the past returned on Meredith’s coma beach, including George, Mark, Lexie, and of course, Derek. One character who didn’t return was Ellis Grey.

That’s changing with Season 18. Kate Burton will reprise her role as Ellis, starting with the Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 premiere, according to Deadline. She’s going to be around for multiple episodes, although it’s not clear just how many or how she’s going to reappear. After all, Ellis died back in the third season, but it doesn’t stop characters from coming back.

With the return of Meredith’s mother in multiple episodes, it could be a hint that this is going to be the last season. It’s something we’ll be keeping an eye on.
