Descendants 4 release date, cast, trailer and more

When Descendants debuted on Disney Channel back in 2015, there were high hopes for the latest Disney Channel original film from Kenny Ortega and the feature absolutely delivered! Since the film’s release, Disney has greenlit two additional live-action movies as well as a handful of animated specials including this summer’s Descendants: The Royal Wedding.

In the animated feature, viewers watched as Mal and Ben finally exchanged I Do’s much to Hades’s dismay. The future could very well have been designed as the closing chapter in the franchise’s successful run; however, in an interesting turn of events, the film seemed to instead set the stage for Descendants 4.

Was that simply wishful thinking on Disney’s part of could a fourth film in the hit franchise be coming?

Below, we share what is known so far about Descendants 4 including when what we know about the fourth film in the franchise, when it could be coming (including to Disney Plus), the expected cast, and more!

Is Descendants 4 happening?

At this time, Disney has not yet confirmed plans for a fourth Descendants film; however, Descendants: The Royal Wedding absolutely seemed to lay the groundwork for another film.

As the animated special came to a close, the camera panned to a pile of white roses that had been painted red before taking us down the rabbit hole and fading to black. The tease seems to indicate plans for a new installment in the franchise, one with connections to Alice in Wonderland.

Clearly, Disney has plans in place to continue the franchise. What will be interesting to see is if those plans will involve a fourth live-action film or if the franchise might continue down the animated route with an animated feature-length film.

Descendants 4 release date

Because Disney has not yet confirmed whether a fourth Descendants film is in the works, it’s unclear when exactly Descendants 4 could arrive on Disney.

Depending on when Disney officially announces the project and whether it turns out to be a live-action or animated movie, it’s possible we could see the film arrive as early as 2022. However, it’s important to note that Disney has traditionally released new installments every 2 years with Descendants dropping in July 2015, Descendants 2 in July 2017, Descendants 3 dropping in August 2019 and Descendants: The Royal Wedding arriving in August 2021.

Should Disney follow a similar release plan with the fourth film, it’s likely Descendants 4 will arrive sometime in the summer of 2023.

When will Descendants 4 be on Disney Plus?

If Descendants 4 premieres on Disney Channel in summer 2023, it’s likely fans would have to wait until early 2024 for the film to stream on Disney Plus. This is because Disney has typically released the Descendants films on Disney Plus roughly six months after their debut on Disney Channel.

No official cast has been announced for Descendants 4 as of summer 2021, but it seems likely that Disney will work to get most of the original cast to return for the fourth film in the franchise. While there’s no telling which recurring players could return, the early favorites to be involved in the fourth film are Dove Cameron (Mal), Sofia Carson (Evie), Booboo Stewart (Jay) and Mitchell Hope (Ben). It’s also likely we’ll see more of Sarah Jeffery (Audrey) and China Anne McClain (Uma).

In addition to returning favorites, the fourth film is expected to draw inspiration from Alice in Wonderland so it’s likely we’ll meet a character with a connection to the film such as Alice, the Queen of Hearts or the Mad Hatter.

Descendants 4 synopsis

No official synopsis has been released for Descendants 4, but it has been teased that the fourth film will transport viewers to Wonderland in drawing inspiration from the beloved Disney classic.
