Friends would’ve been totally different with these original plans for the main couple

Which Friends couple is your favorite? The sitcom consists of an ensemble cast, so each character and couple got their equal share of spotlight (well, for the most part), and we can’t imagine the comedy without Rachel and Ross, Phoebe and Mike, and Chandler and Monica.

After the Friends reunion on HBO Max, the sitcom is all we can talk about. All sort of fun facts, sad stories, and even dating rumors have surfaced since the reunion special aired.

Today, we bring you a fun fact! Series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, shared behind-the-scenes secrets and facts and one stood out to us from the rest.

Before we dive in, let’s think of our favorite Friends couple. Sure, Ross and Rachel were the hot topic. The will-they-won’t-they couple we were always on the edge of our seat for.

However, in my humble opinion, the best couple in the sitcom is Chandler and Monica. Think about it, Chandler and Monica are not about the drama. They are a healthy and stable couple who know what they want. This was overlooked due to everyone keeping up with Ross and Rachel’s latest shenanigans.

Can you imagine Monica without Chandler? Not only that, but Monica with Joey, instead? Because that’s what almost happened!

What if Monica got together with Joey on Friends?

Vulture shared some tidbits from Saul Austerlit’z tell-all book, Generation Friends, and it turns out the plan was to make Monica and Joey the main couple.

The source shares that Joey was initially envisioned as an ambitious actor and “perpetual horndog,” who is eventually “tamed” by Monica.

Understandably, Crane found this version of Joey and storyline to be boring and instead made Joey the goofy guy we all know and love. They also dropped the idea of a romantic relationship between him and Monica.

The sitcom really dodged a bullet there! It’s amazing how many stories “almost happened,” but didn’t, because the end result is brilliant. Everything happened the way it was meant to.
