Money Heist Season 5 release date, cast, trailer, synopsis, and more

After an explosion in viewership during the first COVID-19 lockdowns and a continuous popularity since its 2017 inception, the thrilling Spanish drama Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) is back for its fifth and final season. Here’s what we know about Money Heist season 5 so far.

The gang will be back on Netflix just next week to begin the conclusion of their five year adventures, picking up from Season 3 and 4’s heist in the Bank of Spain.

Money Heist Season 5 release date:

Netflix has revealed that Part 5 of Money Heist will be released as 2 volumes, with the first five episodes dropping on Sept. 3 and the final five episodes dropping exactly 3 months after on Dec. 3.

Despite the longer wait time for this season (1 year and 5 months, compared to the 9 months between season 3 and 4), the show looks to be going out with a bang certainly worthy of the wait.

After the tragic death of fan favourite Nairobi in season 4, the Money Heist cast list is being shaken up a little for season 5, adding in a few new faces amongst the eclectic gang, hostages and police. Here is who we know we’ll be seeing on our screens come Friday the 3rd:

• Lisbon (Raquel Murillo) – played by Itziar Ituño
• Tokyo (Silene Oliveira) – played by Ursula Corbero
• Rio (Aníbal Cortés) – played by Miguel Herrán
• Denver (Daniel Ramos) – played by Jaime Lorente
• Helsinki (Mirko Dragic) – played by Darko Perić
• Stockholm (Mónica Gaztambide) – played by Esther Acebo
• Palermo (Martín Berrote) – played by Rodrigo de la Serna
• Inspector Alicia Sierra – played by Najwa Nimri
• Arturo Román – played by Enrique Arce
• Ángel Rubio – played by Fernando Soto
• César Gandía – played by José Manuel Poga

As well as Marseille, Bogotá, Julia and Matías, we will be seeing Berlin (Andrés De Fonollosa, played by Pedro Alonso) return in flashbacks, as is consistent with the past couple of seasons. Hopefully there will be some more of Nairobi (Ágata Jiménez, played by Alba Flores) in the same way.

In exciting news, Miguel Ángel Silvestre will be joining Season 5’s lineup as Tokyo’s former love interest, René. Famous in global media, Silvestre is arguably best known in Western circles as Lito Rodriguez in Sense8, and Franklin Jurado in Narcos; we cannot waitto see the role he has to play in Tokyo’s past!

The official English trailer for Season 5 dropped earlier this month and has already racked up over 8.5 million views, whilst the Spanish equivalent has 2.9 million, indicating just how popular Money Heist continues to be despite concerns of waning interest. Money Heist Season 5 synopsis:

Picking up where Season 4 left off, Season 5 will again take place primarily at the Bank of Spain, with the gang attempting to complete the theft of gold and get out safely.

However, Inspector Alicia Sierra (on the run from the police after publicly taking down the entire department) throws a spanner in the works, with the final scene of Season 4 showing her holding The Professor at gunpoint after discovering his secret hideout.

Whilst the trailer indicates that Alicia doesn’t kill him point blank, instead choosing to tie him in chains and engage in what looks to be torture, it’s hard to imagine The Professor worming his way out this time. Telling the gang that  “it’s possible this is the last time I’ll speak to all of you”, means that his death is perhaps on the cards – we’ll just have to wait and see…

With Colonel Tamayo (played by Fernando Cayo) seemingly sending military troops into the Bank of Spain to take down the gang and release the hostages, this season is looking to be just as violent and exciting as usual, whether everyone makes it out in one piece or not.

Both Rio & Tokyo, and Stockholm & Denver look to be reconciling, perhaps in the face of imminent danger, whilst we’re left hungry for the future of Lisbon & The Professor. We’re also wondering how the gang will proceed in the wake of Nairobi’s death, whether it will truly break them, or spur them to victory just as it appeared to at the end of Season 4. Only time will tell….
