The Wonder Years reboot premieres tonight on ABC giving television audiences their first glimpse into the lives of the Williams family and Dean, this generation’s Kevin who idolizes his father and has trouble talking to his crush.

Like the original, we’ll be thrust back into the late ’60s with an older Dean, voiced by Don Cheadle, takes us down memory lane. In 1968, he was 12 years old and navigating adolescence and the color line. Baseball was at the top of his mind as was impressing his dad Bill, a music professor who’s cooler than cool.

Everyone in the Williams’ family has their place. His mom Lillian, who’s an accountant, always puts their family first and is as smart as his father is talented.

Dean’s sister Kim has the confidence he lacks. She’s also not afraid of dashing her parents’ dreams when it comes to college either. Kim has every intention of putting her intellect to good use, she just doesn’t see why that has to be through higher education.

As this family lives and learns together, they’re also in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement and a community struggling over whether they’ll come together or remain divided. It might just take America’s favorite pasttime and the younger generation to see change come to their area.
