Is Ellen Pompeo leaving Grey’s Anatomy?
The start of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 has been focused on Meredith being offered a lab with her name on it. Now she’s taken the project. Does this mean Ellen Pompeo is leaving?
We start with the fact that Grey’s Anatomy is taking Meredith away from Grey Sloan Memorial again for a while. She’s taking on research to cure Parkinson’s, but it will mean being in another state for some time.
It certainly seems like it’s a sign the show is getting ready to shut down. Is it getting ready to see the characters head off to other pastures?
Every season, there seems to be something that could take Meredith away from Seattle permanently. We’re always looking out for signs that Ellen Pompeo is leaving Grey’s Anatomy.
Ellen Pompeo is not leaving Grey’s Anatomy…yet
Let’s start with the good news. Meredith taking on the research does not mean that Ellen Pompeo is leaving the series. We’ve seen how the show has managed it before with Cristina in Minnesota.
We also have to point out that Meredith made it clear that she’s not moving states. She still needs to be at Grey Sloan Memorial, so she is only at The Clinic (don’t you just love the sign for The Mayo Clinic on the show?) once a week.
This doesn’t mean Pompeo won’t leave the series at the end of the season. This is something that comes up every season. Pompeo only signs on for a year at a time now because she isn’t sure if she wants to do another season. It always depends on the storylines to come. She also knows that if she leaves the series, Grey’s Anatomy is most likely done and that puts hundreds of people out of work.
We’ll be sure to keep an eye on what’s going with Meredith’s storyline on Grey’s Anatomy Season 18.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC. Watch the following day on Hulu.
