Why Lisa Kudrow struggled with body image on Friends: ‘Fittings were not fun’
Starring in one of the biggest TV shows of all time certainly has its perks, but like with anything, there are also some disadvantages. Having millions of people tuning in to watch you on their screens for 10 years adds a level of pressure to make sure your acting is on point, and that you look good as well.
Lisa Kudrow is one of the many actors who have dealt with body image issues while playing an iconic character on television, and earlier this year she opened up on how difficult that was when she was on Friends.
The 58-year-old star played the one and only Pheobe Buffay, and though the character had a bit of a quirkier fashion style than the other two ladies, Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) and Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), Kudrow still felt a bit uncomfortable in the dressing room.
While a guest on The Howard Stern Show back in June 2021, as reported by People, Kudrow was accompanied by Aniston and Cox and discussed how she compared herself to her former co-stars on Friends.
Explaining that she felt her body was “different,” Kudrow said she didn’t feel comfortable wearing the same clothing that Aniston and Cox did. She shared:
"“It’s not that I felt horrible around them. Fittings were not fun, that’s for sure. Yeah, I have a different body type. I’m just bigger and sometimes the clothes, when I’d see the show, were so sort of full of volume … it was only this one moment where I hugged both of them but there was no sleeve. It was just like, I enveloped them. I felt like this mountainous thing that swallowed them alive.”"
It’s so unfortunate that Kudrow felt this way on set. Pheobe is without a doubt one of the best characters on Friends, and the actress is so beloved by the show’s fanbase! It wouldn’t be the same without her and we absolutely love her fun wardrobe.
All 10 seasons of Friends are currently streaming on HBO Max if you’re in need of a rewatch.
