Why White Men Can’t Jump is the best buddy movie ever
White Men Can’t Jump features a complicated love story
The reason Romeo and Juliet became the most renowned romantic saga of all time is the unexpected plot twists and the tragic ending. If it were a simple tale of boy meets girl, it would not have survived the test of time.
Similarly, the romance between Billy Hoyle and Gloria Clemente is complicated. Gloria finds herself rooting for Billy to hustle as much money as he can in the high stakes street ball games of Los Angeles. Her motives are both genuine and complicated. She loves Billy and she wants him to be able to pay off the bookies he owes money to.
She doesn’t want anything to happen to him. She also doesn’t have a job and is dependent on Billy for survival. Not to mention she is a college dropout, desperate to pay off her student loans and betting on a chance to appear on the game show Jeopardy to solve all of her problems. Perhaps complicated isn’t a strong enough phrase; “a hot mess” is more like it.
Movie lovers who haven’t seen White Men Can’t Jump can rent or buy the movie on VOD or watch it on Amazon. Between the ’90s trash talking lingo, the action packed runaway scenes and the interesting subplots, audiences will find themselves entertained from start to finish.
The characters are relatable, the heroes are flawed and the main characters have a friendship that is complex. There have been many buddy movies produced over the years; White Men Can’t Jump is the best of them all.
