Warning: This article contains spoilers about Insecure season 5!

Insecure season 5 finally dropped its first episode on HBO Max and, boy, do we have tons of burning questions!

We open this season with several aspects of Issa Dee’s life seemingly falling into place including her friendship with her BFF, Molly Carter. However, just when we believed that everything was taking a turn for the good, we were hit with the shocking ending of Issa breaking it off with her boyfriend Lawrence Walker once again.

Why did Issa call it quits this time? Read on to find out the reasons behind this heartbreaking breakup.

Why did Issa and Lawrence break up?

Unfortunately, Issa and Lawrence broke up for the same reasons why they went their separate ways in previous seasons, which is because these two never seem to be on the same page nor on the same path at the same time.

Towards the end of episode 1, Issa informs Lawrence that she had a chance to truly process things regarding both herself and her relationship with him, and though words went unsaid after this moment, it was clear that Issa, once again, was on an entirely different world than the man standing in front of her who is currently expecting a child with his ex-girlfriend Condola Hayes.

With this in mind, it’s safe to assume that the weight of her longtime partner about to be a father was too much for Issa to bare especially considering the fact that she just finally started to improve in various aspects of her life including her career and her friendships.

So is the cursed fate of Issa and Lawrence.

Ever since the start of the series, we know that Issa and Lawrence have always been in somewhat of an on-again, off-again relationship solely due to the fact that they can’t seem to figure out how to grow together as a couple despite having little to no trouble doing better in life when they are away from each other. By the end of Insecure season 5 episode 1, we see that this cycle is still one that they haven’t managed to break and may, sadly, never figure out how to.

Though Issa and Lawrence seem to have called it quits for good, there is still a chance that these two will work it out in the end. After all, it’s only the first episode and Insecure season 5 still has so much in store for us to see.
