In the 1970s the Watergate Scandal dominated the headlines and ultimately led to President Richard Nixon’s ouster from the White House. In American Horror Story: Double Feature’s Death Valley, creator Ryan Murphy puts a fascinating twist on the informant Deep Throat’s motivation for spilling secrets to the Washington Post, and it plays perfectly off of Nixon’s penchant for paranoia.

The Watergate Scandal revolves around a break-in at the Democratic National Committee office in June 1972. The burglaries were tied to Nixon’s re-election campaign, and soon thereafter more of his improprieties in office were exposed.

Who is Deep Throat on American Horror Story?

The only reason so much information came to light was due in large part to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s investigation and reporting for the Washington Post. They credit an informant, known as Deep Throat in a nod to the 1972 porn classic, as being the one to share inside information that blew the roof off the investigation. In 2005, Deep Throat was revealed to be former associate FBI director W. Mark Felt.

In Ryan Murphy’s alternate version of U.S. History, Deep Throat is none other than Mamie Eisenhower (Sarah Paulson), who is keenly interested in protecting the aliens who signed an agreement with her husband.

The aliens were behind John F. Kennedy’s assassination, preventing him from revealing their presence on earth. Mamie knows that Nixon is on the verge of revealing their secrets, too, but she convinces alien ambassador Valiant Thor (Cody Fern) to let her do things her way. She knows Nixon’s nerves are enough to make him paranoid for the rest of her life, so she exposes a few details about the break-in to the Washington Post in an effort to silence him. It works.

Though it’s very unlikely that aliens signed a secret agreement with Dwight D. Eisenhower during his presidency, JFK’s assassination and Nixon’s nerves make for a great revisionist history of what was happening in the White House in the years following World War II. And having prim and proper Mrs. Eisenhower in the role of Deep Throat is the most clever twist of all.
