The All American season 3 finale left us with some pressing questions. Would Coop die from her gunshot wound? What would happen to Layla and Carrie on the road? And, who would win the California State Championship? Beverly or Crenshaw?

What we didn’t expect the All American season 4 premiere, “Survival of the Fittest,” to do is answer that last question in a way that left it up for debate.

The entire series the two teams have battled it out for greatness, trading peak success to unfortunate failure episode to episode. Spencer has played for both teams, earning a championship ring as an Eagle and working hard to win one as a Charger.

Coop’s shooting, however, pulled him out of the last state championship game of his high school career which left Crenshaw to fight for the title without him.

They lost to Beverly who hooped and hollered over their victory, but the way the final play went down alluded to a possible storyline that throws their win into question.

Here’s what we know!

Did Beverly win the state championship in the All American season 4 premiere?

Officially, the Beverly High Eagles did win the state championship. The referees announced that Crenshaw was short of the touchdown they needed to swing the game in their favor. However, it was clear that neither Billy nor the rest of the team believed the call to be right.

This wasn’t a case of sour grapes.

The refs didn’t seem sure that Chris hadn’t made the touchdown and were conversing among themselves as each team shouted what they believe happened. As they don’t replay footage at the state championship, what the refs say on the field, whether or not they’re actually sure about the call they’re making, goes.

Billy, unable to believe that Crenshaw didn’t make that touchdown, replays the game footage days after the championship. He says the Chargers won in spite of what the official ruling was. The fact that this was brought up more than once in “Survival of the Fittest” hints at the possibility of a contested win becoming a larger plot in season 4.

If it does that means Billy will be clashing with his son, Jordan, once again over legacy and the line Billy walks as a coach and a father. To contest Beverly’s win would mean Jordan would be out of a championship title and would have ended his high school football career on a loss.

However, if Billy doesn’t contest the win, he’d be sacrificing his integrity, letting his team down who already feel like they were cheated, and keeping his players from the glory of a state championship win.

It’s a tough decision. One All American might sidestep to focus on other storylines, but it’s undeniable that it’s a direction the show could go in. Considering Jordan and Billy are set to be at odds once again in season 4, episode 2 “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That,” perhaps we won’t be waiting too long to see how this might play out.
