Is Deb alive in Dexter: New Blood?

Everyone’s favorite fictional serial killer is back, and no, I’m not talking about Joe Goldberg! The titular character of Showtime’s Dexter has returned with a brand-new revival series, and fans of the original show have been counting down the days until we could see him back on our screens.

UPDATE 11/7/2021: Dexter: New Blood was scheduled to premiere the night of Sunday, Nov. 7 at 9:00 p.m. However, the episode was released to stream early at midnight, so it’s available now online or on the apps. Star Michael C. Hall has reprised his role in Dexter: New Blood, which just premiered its first episode tonight. But he’s not the only one who is returning for this miniseries. Fans were shocked to hear that Jennifer Carpenter would be joining the cast to reprise her role as Debra Morgan, Dexter’s late sister.

People started coming up with theories as to how Deb could return in New Blood, and now that the first episode is out, we know for sure. Is she really alive? How has she come back?

How is Deb in Dexter: New Blood?

Unfortunately, Deb is still dead in New Blood. Similar to how Dexter would see visions of his late father Harry in the original series, he sees visions of Deb in the revival. Dexter is able to interact with his late sister, although she’s a figment of his imagination.

New Blood takes place about 10 years after the events of the Dexter finale, and Dexter’s vision of Deb is there to keep him on the right track. When the miniseries opens up, he hadn’t killed anyone since we last saw him and he’s doing his best to live a less violent life with a new identity in New York.

That doesn’t exactly last long in the premiere, however, as Dexter does turn back to his old ways and murders someone.

We’re sure Deb will continue to show up in New Blood, serving as a good conscience of sorts for her brother.

Fans will remember Deb’s heartbreaking death in Dexter season 8 after she was shot by Oliver Saxon (Darri Ingolfsson) and suffered complications after surgery. Dexter ultimately decided to take her off life support, something that absolutely crushed him and viewers at home watching. Of course, this series finale was extremely divisive, with many fans finding they didn’t get any closure in the end.

New Blood is certain to give us that closure we need from Dexter’s story, and though Deb is dead, we’re happy to see her on our screens again.
