Is Iron Lake, New York in Dexter: New Blood a real place?

Dexter: New Blood has officially begun, with the highly-anticipated premiere releasing on Sunday, Nov. 7. Fans of the original Showtime series were counting down the days until they could see their favorite fictional vigilante on their screens again, and though we have a new location for the revival, we’re getting the same old Dexter (Michael C. Hall).

But that doesn’t mean Dexter isn’t trying to be better. The revival takes place about 10 years after the events of the Dexter season 8 finale, as the titular character lives under a new name and is far away from his native Miami, Florida.

Last we had seen of Dexter in the final moments of season 8, he’d moved to Oregon and was working as a lumberjack. But his life has totally changed again in Dexter: New Blood.

Dexter now lives in a very small town called Iron Lake, which is located in New York. It’s a very scenic place with lots of snow and woods to hunt. People from New York City frequently come to visit during hunting season to show off what they’ve got.

Is Iron Lake a real place?

While watching the Dexter: New Blood premiere, many viewers wondered if Iron Lake, New York is a real place or not. The small-town vibe is awfully eerie, though it looks like such a beautiful place.

Well, though there technically is a lake called Iron Lake in New York, the town Dexter now lives in is fictional. Back in January 2021 when initial details about Dexter: New Blood were first still coming out, TVLine reported that the new location for the revival would be: “the fictional small town of Iron Lake.”

Where is Dexter: New Blood filmed?

Given Iron Lake, New York isn’t a real town, that begs the question of where Dexter: New Blood was actually filmed. Well, according to that same TVLine report, the revival was shot mostly in Massachusetts. More specifically, according to Polygon, in the small town of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts.

Needless to say, this location is very different from the sunny Miami, Florida we got to see throughout all eight seasons of Dexter. Not having the bay to dispose of bodies might pose an issue for our main protagonist — let’s see if he gets creative.
