Miranda Cosgrove on her partnership with HP’s Girls Save the World
Our entire generation knows Cosgrove as Carly Shay from Nickelodeon’s iCarly. This is why I loved learning that the star is so involved and vocal about the environment and animal rights! I feel it’s so important to see someone we grew up watching care so much about making the world a better place. After all, Miranda Cosgrove is literally the original influencer.
Hidden Remote: When did you first become interested in these causes?
Miranda Cosgrove: When I was about 13 or 14, I started working with Oceana, and I had this really amazing experience where I got to go to the Bahamas and swim with wild dolphins and I got to learn all about seismic blasting and how that affects marine life. So I’ve been working with Oceana ever since and then I’m just obsessed with animals. I’ve love animals my whole life. I wanted to be a vet if I didn’t become an actress. And so I foster a lot of animals, which I got into about four or five years ago, and I currently have like six animals and four of them are fosters.
Hidden Remote: Now, how did you become involved with HP’s Girls Save the World program? Can you tell us a little about that?
Cosgrove: So I’m just super excited to be working with HP because I definitely think that girls can make a huge difference in the world. And this campaign that they’re doing, Girls Save the World, is awesome! It’s for any girl between the ages of 13 and 18 that wants to sign up that has an idea to help the environment in their community. It could be any idea to help the environment. And it’s awesome because they can win money towards their cause and prizes. I’m super excited to be working with them. I think it’s really important for girls to know their potential from a young age and to realize that they can make a difference.
Hidden Remote: Absolutely. How can the girls enter?
Cosgrove: So you [HERE] and all the information is there. And you have to sign up before January 18. But they’re doing this really cool thing too, Girls Save the World Solveathon Workshop, and that’s on Dec. 11, 2021. And you can go and you can work out your idea or talk about your idea with other girls and and kind of like figure out exactly what you want to do.
Hidden Remote: I think a major reason why not everyone gets involved is that they may think it’s just too much work. But it really isn’t! Can you share some simple everyday ways that we can all contribute to sustainability?
Cosgrove: I felt that way at I first…but once I started doing it, I was like, this is something I can totally do. I’d say just like small things that you can do to help the environment. Things that I try to come up with are whenever I wash my hands, or taking a shower, I try really hard to be thinking about the water that I’m using and go as quickly as I can. I also have a bunch of bags in my trunk, reusable bags, so when I go to the supermarket, I can use those.
Hidden Remote: Now, about iCarly. I think the original series was way ahead of its time, when all the technology and the influencer hype wasn’t a thing. It’s also so fitting that it’s now on a streaming platform. How has it been working on a more modern take of the show?
Cosgrove: That’s funny, I didn’t even think about how it’s on a streaming platform! I’m having a great time getting to make the show again. We’re in the middle of the second season right now. I feel like this season we’re getting to do way crazier stuff. We have a lot more stunts, and we have a lot of people back from the old series that weren’t able to come in the first season.
Hidden Remote: What are you working on next besides all that?
Cosgrove: I’m working on a show called Mission Unstoppable, it’s on CBS and it’s all about teaching girls about STEM and showing them all the different jobs that are in the STEM field so that maybe someday they can be a part of it. And that’s been a lot of fun getting to be a part of that show.
