There are hundreds if not thousands of TV shows released every year and I often miss a lot of them. Only certain shows can reel me in for the entire season, and today, I share with you why I think True Story is the best show of the year.

True Story follows superstar Kid (Kevin Hart) who has it all, the family, the fame, the money, but also has that brother in Carlton (Wesley Snipes) who feeds off of that fame and is always making things harder on Kid.

There have been so many standup comedians (or comedy actors) attempt to cross the line into the world of serious acting and it doesn’t always work. I have loved what Kevin Hart brought to the table in the movie Fatherhood, but even with that, he still was in a safe space of more comedy than drama. However, Kevin Hart promised that True Story would be like something we had never seen from him before. He lived up to that promise.

True Story on Netflix is one of the best shows of 2021

The show had some phenomenal writing that had so many twists and turns that you don’t see coming at all. There were layers within the show that you don’t even realize are being structured until they happen. I was impressed with their ability to keep you on the edge of your seat.

We all know that the writing is only as good as the presentation by the actors. For example, Kevin Hart, while some will say he plays himself (and during some parts he does), delivers as we have never seen him before. It wasn’t the funny moments that I loved, but the more profound moments where Hart is delivering these serious lines that you see him disappear in the role. I was blown away by his work.

The biggest reason I think we saw a side of Hart we have never seen before was because of his counterpart in Wesley Snipes. Snipes brings it every time he is on the screen, forcing those around him to do the same. Snipes plays the role of Carlton to perfection. Another stand out from the show is Theo Rossi, who plays an obsessive fan of Kid. There are several show-stealing scenes from Rossi that are still stuck in my head.

If you have been looking for a reason to check out the show, here it is. It’s not just a good show, it is one of the best original series we have seen to date on Netflix. I hope we do see another season soon.
