One of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays comes to the big screen in The Tragedy of Macbeth. With the film set for a holiday release, is it an exclusive theatrical experience or can you watch it online?

The Tragedy of Macbeth tells the story of Lord Macbeth, a Scottish lord, and general who’s known for his courage and fearlessness. Three witches visit the titular character and convince the Lord that he will one day become the King of Scotland. Provoked by his wife, Lady Macbeth, the general eventually comes into power, but his tyrannical reign is marred with paranoia and regret for his past actions.

The film is led by two of the greatest actors of the last forty years, Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. Washington plays Lord Macbeth while McDormand plays his wife, Lady Macbeth. Corey Hawkins, Brendan Gleeson, Harry Melling, Bertie Carvel, and Alex Hassell round out the supporting cast.

The Tragedy of Macbeth is written and directed by Joel Coen, the director behind Oscar-winning films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men. Macbeth marks the first film directed by Joel without the inclusion of his brother, Ethan Coen.

The film premiered at the 2021 New York Film Festival to positive reviews. It is set for a limited release on Christmas Day, Dec. 25. Will it eventually be available on streaming?
