Pixar’s Lightyear is getting closer and closer for its rocket launch debut. The recent trailer revealed new voice actors and insight into the film’s major plots.

As many already know, the movie stars Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans) and tells the story of how he became a space ranger. This Toy Story prequel teases action, sci-fi and adventure for audiences of all ages.

When is the Lightyear movie release Date?

Pixar’s Lightyear will orbit into theaters on June 17, 2022, pending no COVID-19 delays. But what about a streaming release? Let’s look into that…

Will Lightyear release on Disney+?

For the time being, Lightyear will not be premiering on Disney+ for a simultaneous release with theaters. It will exclusively release in theaters with the possibility of following in the footsteps of other movies like Shang-Chi and The Eternals , eventually being streamable. Disney has been leaning toward a 45-day release window before moving things to Disney+.

This is possibly due to disappointing viewership numbers and profit from straight-to-streaming film debuts like Soul and Luca. Both films performed dismally in the box office.

However, Disney isn’t completely done with sending films straight to streaming, as the upcoming film Turning Red will be arriving on Disney+ for its premiere on March 11. This Pixar movie seems to be a way to keep content going for the streaming giant, while also having some movies premiere in theaters.

With Lightyear’s  early popularity and the fact that it’s a prequel to the already beloved Toy Story franchise, it may be more strategic to give it a theatrical debut. The pandemic has undoubtedly presented new obstacles for filmmaking and debuting films, which continues to impact whether we see them in theaters, streaming platforms or both.

Will you be watching Lightyear in theaters or wait for its streaming release? As soon as we have an official Disney+ release date, we’ll update this post!
