New Amsterdam ending with Season 5: How many episodes are in the final season?

We know that New Amsterdam Season 5 is happening. NBC has now made the decision that it will be the final season, and we have an episode count.

Back in 2020, NBC renewed New Amsterdam for three seasons. It meant we wouldn’t have to worry about the medical drama until the 2022–2023 TV season. Well, NBC has already decided what to do about the show’s future.

TVLine reports that Season 5 is going to be the last of the series. That isn’t all too surprising with the decision to renew for three seasons together. We saw the same happen with This Is Us and that is ending with its sixth season.

The show’s ratings are okay but not as strong as they could be. It sits in eighth and ninth place in the demo and audience respectively out of all NBC shows.

How many episodes will New Amsterdam Season 5 have?

The final season is going to be the shortest season of all. It’s going to have just 13 episodes to wrap up the story.

What’s not clear is whether this series will make up the fall 2022 TV season. We saw This Is Us get a shortened season order for the final season and it was pushed to the midseason. However, this was partly due to the pandemic and making sure the final season could run uninterrupted except for the Winter Olympics.

We could see the medical drama held off until the midseason. This would allow all episodes to film and prevent a break around winter. It would also prevent any issues if there are still filming delays due to the pandemic.

It’s not 100% clear why Season 5 is the last. Is it a show decision or a network decision? It may not matter. With the notification, the writers can make sure they wrap up with an epic final season.
