Marvel fans are buzzing with excitement after the release of the new Ms. Marvel trailer yesterday. The Marvel Studios series, which will stream on Disney+, is the production company’s latest Marvel Comics adaptation.

The story is all about Muslim American teenager Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel. The groundbreaking comic which the series is based on was released in 2013. The publication of the comic and now its adaptation is a big step not just for the streamer, but for the movie industry. Ms. Marvel is the first Muslim American superhero to be portrayed, especially on such a large scale.

Representation in the industry has become so important in the last few years. Companies and studios are still working on being better, and this move is a promising step in that direction. Playing the young superhero will be actress Iman Vellani.

Comic book fans will know all about her powers. Khan is a polymorph – changing her size and shape. She’s also got shape shifting and embiggening her fists skills up her sleeve. While these supernatural abilities are familiar to comic book fans, will they translate to the television miniseries?

What are Ms. Marvel’s powers?

What we can tell from the trailer so far is that Disney+ decided to move in a different direction when it comes to Ms. Marvel’s powers. Instead of being able to stretch, grow, and changer her size, she has more cosmic-based energy on the show instead.

Though if you look closely at the 1:25 mark in the trailer, you can see her embiggened fist. We don’t know yet if the trailer has shown us all the powers she now possesses. There may be more that pay homage to the comics that just weren’t teased.

They’ve also changed up the way Khan gets her powers. In the comic books, she’s exposed to Terrigen Mist, which gives her these abilities. The trailer however suggests Ms. Marvel will be born when she puts on a certain accessory. In the comics, the bangles were worn for sentimental value because they were her great-grandmother’s. But in the MCU, it seems like the bracelet will play a bigger role.

These changes doesn’t bother me too much. I just love the representation of a Muslim American teen, Vellani’s endearing nature, and the new series just looks so fun! However, I really do understand why diehard Marvel fans are disappointed.

Ms. Marvel is an introduction to Kamala Khan before she moves on to the big screen for the upcoming movie, The Marvels, in 2023.

Ms. Marvel will stream on Disney+ beginning June 8.
