Oscars 2022: How many nominations did Belfast receive?

The Oscars are right around the corner. This weekend, the award show will be honoring films that made an impact in 2021. And one of those is Belfast.

Belfast is a semi-autobiographical film by director and writer Kenneth Branagh that chronicles the life of a working class family and their son’s childhood during a period of time in Ireland known as The Troubles. It was a difficult political time in the Northern Ireland capital in the 1960s.

The movie focuses on the events that lead the family to making a decision to move away from their home. It’s all told through the lens of young boy, Buddy. Branagh said the movie has been his “most personal film.”

The stellar cast who rounds out the film includes Jamie Dornan, Caitríona Balfe, Ciarán Hinds, Judi Dench, and the absolutely cutest child actor Jude Hill. Branagh and the cast didn’t think the film would become so big, and now they could be taking home multiple accolades from the Academy Awards!

has been nominated for seven Oscars, and a couple of the categories are really exciting! The biggest are Best Picture and Branagh for Best Director. The man behind it all has also been nominated for Best Writing (Original Screenplay).

From the cast, Hinds could be taking home the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award and Dench has a chance at Best Actress in a Supporting Role. “Down to Joy” by Van Morrison which was featured in the movie has also been nominated for Best Original Song.

It’s so exciting that the film has been recognized in all of these categories! Because it’s such a personal story for Branagh, I think the story really resonated with audiences. It’s also about a family who doesn’t want to leave their home, but are forced to because of political troubles. Unfortunately, that’s something many people can relate to today even though the conflict happened in the 1960s.

I do think Dornan and Balfe were snubbed. The two movie leads definitely deserved to be recognized for their work. After lots of buzz that there was a chance Balfe would land her first Oscar nomination, it’s a real shame it didn’t happen.
