The major Friends plot twist with Phoebe and Joey that almost happened

Throughout the 10 seasons of Friends, there are a few romances we live for, including Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), along with Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) and Mike Hannigan (Paul Rudd), while there are some relationships we just flat-out don’t like, for instance Rachel and Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc).

There are also a few romances that almost happened, like Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) and Joey. The creators of Friends previously revealed that Monica and Joey were the original Ross and Rachel! That would’ve been strange to see play out. And another almost-relationship that was pitched during Friends would’ve been a major plot twist — as Kudrow and LeBlanc once shared.

During a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kudrow and LeBlanc explained why there was never a romance between Phoebe and Joey on Friends, saying that actually almost happened. And that’s not all. It was pitched that the two characters had been secretly hooking up all along!

Here’s what LeBlanc had to say about what almost happened for his and Kudrow’s characters:

"“Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time. We’d go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognizes, there’s Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they were like, ‘Nah.’”"

Considering the amount of backlash the show got from fans when Rachel and Joey got together, I’d suspect people wouldn’t be happy with a surprise relationship between Phoebe and Joey, even if it was just casual. Are there any characters on
