NCIS season 19, episode 18, “Peacekeeper,” further touched on Nick’s feelings when it came to abandonment. All season, we saw him struggling with losing his dad, Ellie, and Gibbs in a short amount of time.

There was a lot of pain he was holding inside and he got to work through some of it during a case. This time, it involved a murder and the possible sale of weapons.

The team discovers via a witness that the person involved is a man named Reymundo Diaz, who Nick had gone after in an undercover sting. During the sting, he began a relationship with Diaz’s cousin, Maria, who would go into witness protection after testifying against him.

Nick had essentially abandoned her undercover, lying about joining her in witness protection. He’s clearly feeling guilt for his actions, and it’s something she clocks immediately. Maria figures out he must have been left behind as well.

NCIS Season 19, Episode 18 focuses on Nick’s past undercover assignment

Instead of giving into her question of who the girl was who left him, Nick instead tries to convince her to leave for her own safety.

Unfortunately, they are unable to escape Diaz, but Nick is able to give Maria a weapon for her own safety. Despite not having the gunpowder Diaz holds, Nick takes him down and Maria is able to save her own life as well.

In addition to laying some old demons to rest, Nick is able to let go of some of the pain he has been feeling through aiding Maria and getting rid of the threat. Nick may still have a lot of work to do in therapy but the important thing is he’s taking the steps he needs to take care of his own mental health.

It’s been such a neat journey to see Nick growing through losing people he has come to rely on, mainly Gibbs and someone he really liked, Ellie. Whether he ever sees her again remains to be seen, but hopefully Nick is able to get some closure when it comes to that aspect of his life.

This was a really good Nick-centric episode of NCIS. We got to see some more of what his life was like in the undercover world. Plus, it was nice character development for him as well.

The next episode of NCIS will air on Monday, May 2. Until then, you can catch up on previous episodes on Paramount+.
