Barbie, one of the buzziest films in Hollywood yet to debut which isn’t a Marvel or DC movie, is set to drop viewers into the titular icon’s world in 2023. While that’s a long ways off, we anticipate this blockbuster will be making waves as more information pours in about the movie.

Mattel’s brand is a household staple, but its face is Barbie. She’s been a part of pop culture for decades. Praised, maligned, and changed for the times, there isn’t a point in the history of toys that this doll and her counterparts haven’t touched in some way.

Now, with Margot Robbie cast as the lead and Greta Gerwig tapped to direct, we’re in for a ride. When can we expect to see the film and who’s a part of the cast? Here’s what we know about the movie!

Barbie release date

Deadline reports that the film will premiere Friday, July 21, 2023 in theaters.

Barbie cast

The movie has a stacked cast. Details on their characters are being tightly held. With exception to Robbie’s casting as Barbie and Ryan Gosling playing opposite her as her boyfriend, Ken, no one knows who the rest of the cast will be playing. There’s speculation that Sex Education‘s Emma Mackey will play Skipper. Considering how much she and Robbie favor one another, we could see the actress playing Barbie’s kid sister.

Here’s a rundown of the cast:

  • Margot Robbie as Barbie
  • Ryan Gosling as Ken
  • America Ferrara
  • Kate McKinnon
  • Simu Liu
  • Ariana Greenblatt
  • Emma Mackey
  • Alexandra Shipp
  • Issa Rae
  • Michael Cera
  • Hari Nef
  • Will Ferrell
  • Kingsley Ben-Adir
  • Rhea Perlman
  • Ncuti Gatwa
  • Emerald Fennell
  • Sharon Rooney
  • Scott Evans
  • Ana Cruz Kayne
  • Connor Swindells
  • Ritu Arya
  • Jamie Demetriou

Barbie plot details

There’s been no word on what the plot of this Mattel flick will be. Greta Gerwig’s attachment to the project as director does have people wondering if it’ll have a more mature take. We expect a deeper exploration of Barbie’s pink world due to Gerwig’s involvement. What that’ll mean, however, is up in the air.

Gerwig’s adaptation of the classic novel Little Women was championed for its nuance, and its ability to breathe new life into a story that’s already been adapted more than once. In regards to Barbie, we may be seeing what “life in plastic” may really be like.

We’ll keep you posted on more news about the film as it comes in. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote!
