Concluding on May 9, NBC’s American Song Contest saw 50 representatives of the US states compete with original songs in a Eurovision-esque singing competition for votes from both the public and a jury. With everything from Tennessean country tracks to Georgian sass and Connecticut’s Grammy-winning Michael Bolton, the show was a fairly wild ride over 8 weeks! But who was crowned the winner of American Song Contest?

Who won American Song Contest?

The performer taking home the American Song Contest trophy was Oklahoma native and K-Pop star AleXa! After a nail-biting race to the finish (with Colorado’s Riker Lynch coming in second place), AleXa took the crown thanks to a huge public vote for her track ‘Wonderland’. Watch the first live qualifier performance below:

Who is AleXa?

So who is behind the winner of American Song Contest? Born Alexandra Schneiderman in 1996, AleXa is a 25-year-old up and coming Korean-American pop star. After growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, AleXa took her childhood and young adulthood dance and theatre skills to the world of K-Pop.

Under her first and middle names (Alex Christine), AleXa entered competitions sponsored by the major K-Pop companies JYP (responsible for such global K-Pop acts as Stray Kids, Twice, and GOT7) and Cube Entertainment (known for (G)I-DLE, Pentagon, and 4Minute) before the televised singing and dancing contest Produce 48.

Now in the public eye, AleXa debuted as a fully-fledged K-Pop star with her track ‘Bomb’ in October 2019 — the track has since garnered almost 25 million views on YouTube and over 9 million streams on Spotify, a testament to AleXa’s continuously growing global success.

What’s next for AleXa after American Song Contest?

Supported by her fans (known as A.I. Troopers, after one of her first singles), AleXa is no doubt a force to be reckoned with in both the American and Korean pop industries as she bridges a gap between the two. With a unique, futuristic concept and oftentimes EDM/dance-heavy sound, AleXa offers something powerful to the performance world.

She will be back on American screens soon to perform at the Billboard Music Awards on May 15 2022 (only the second Korean artist ever to do so after BTS). A world tour is also potentially on the cards soon, with AleXa stating the following in a recent interview “I really want to do a tour of South America if possible,”. Whilst we wait and see what happens on that front, we can all but hope that AleXa will be releasing her first full-length album soon!
