* Spoilers for American Idol season 20 finale below
Another season means another American Idol winner. And the one who went home with that title for the ABC series’ 20th season is Noah Thompson!
The singing competition series held a three-hour finale packed with performances from judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, as well as special guests like Sara Bareilles, Michael Bublé, and Ben Platt. And, if you had some favorites from this season go home, then they had the chance to take to the stage once again as the show welcomed back some of the past contestants of the season.
But it was the Top 3’s moment to shine in the spotlight as they sang for America’s votes one last time. Huntergirl, Leah Marlene and, of course, Noah Thompson serenaded us with their voices. And it was the Kentucky native who went home crowned this season’s American Idol!
The series has already been renewed by the network, which means we’re getting another round of aspiring talent. So when can we expect season 21?
When does American Idol return with new episodes?
* UPDATE: ABC announced American Idol season 21 is set to premiere Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023.
ABC hasn’t shared a set premiere date yet. But going off the release date pattern of previous seasons since its move to the network, we can take a pretty good guess as to when new episodes will be on our screens once again.
New seasons have been premiering sometime in the winter between Feb. and March, with the finale dates in May. So American Idol season 21 should be back in its regular midseason time slot in 2023.
Whether the same judges will be back is still in question as well. But there’s no need to worry yet. While it hasn’t been confirmed whether Perry, Bryan, and Richie will once again take up their judging responsibilities, Deadline reports the series is typically renewed in May and the judges sign their contracts in the summer. The same goes for host Ryan Seacrest.
American Idol season 20 can now be streamed on Hulu, and new episodes are expected to come out in winter 2023.
