Tom Swift made its debut at the tail end of May on The CW. The series, which follows the titular character in the aftermath of his father’s “death,” is a spin-off of the popular Nancy Drew series that’s been airing on the network since 2019.

Nancy Drew is a supernatural drama that was likened to Riverdale by casual viewers before the show grew into its own and set itself apart from other titles on The CW. In contrast, Tom Swift is a sci-fi that leans heavily into technology and space since Tom is a brilliant inventor who also happens to be a billionaire.

The shows also have two different tones, so it’s understandable if viewers are wondering if they’re missing something if they didn’t tune into Nancy Drew first. Can you watch Tom Swift without having watched its parent show? Here’s what we know!

Do you have to watch Nancy Drew to understand Tom Swift?

If you only want to watch Tom’s show, you’re in luck! While it is a spin-off, it’s possible to watch the series without having watched a single episode of Nancy Drew. However, we do recommend watching Tom’s introduction into the Nancyverse. He’s featured in season 2, episode 15 “The Celestial Visitor.”

The episode will give Tom Swift viewers background on Tom’s relationship with his father as it takes place before he stopped allowing his dad to overlook that he’s gay. His personality is much the same, but Tom’s at a time in his life where he hasn’t challenged his father’s picture of him. The episode also tells the story of how Tom was able to acquire the meteorite that would eventual fuel his father’s rocket to Saturn.

Nancy Drew season 1-2 is available to stream on HBO Max, if you’d like to watch “The Celestial Vistor.” Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more Tom Swift news and coverage!
