Legacies has ended, and it’s brought The Vampire Diaries universe to an end after 13 years. Is this it, or will other shows arrive in the future?

The CW brought The Vampire Diaries universe to an abrupt end after 13 years. Legacies was surprisingly cancelled after four seasons, although it wasn’t because of the network. Some of this was due to the production studios deciding to no longer support the shows they produce.

It brought an end to a universe that all started with one girl falling in love with two vampire brothers. Over the years, we watched the mythology grow with Original Vampires and multi-breed creatures.

With the end of Legacies, we have to look at what this means about The Vampire Diaries universe. Is this the end of it, or is there hope that a spin-off could happen in the future?

The Vampire Diaries universe isn’t completely dead yet

Considering the dead don’t stay dead in this universe, we shouldn’t expect the universe to stay that way. According to TVLine, there is talk of continuing the universe in another way. Julie Plec shared that this is just the end of one chapter, but there is hope for more chapters in the future.

As of right now, there are now shows in the works. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing that can happen in the future. Brett Matthews and Kevin Williamson are on board with Plec to continue the universe. They just need to figure out which creatures to focus on next. They need to figure out how to create a world that will be interesting to the fans of the franchise.

We have seen a few universes continue years after the main shows have come to an end. Just look at Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin coming soon years after Pretty Little Liars ended, and the Teen Wolf movie is in the works. We’re also going to see House of the Dragon this year despite Game of Thrones ending in 2019, and The CW is bringing us the Supernatural spin-off The Winchesters three years after the end of the main series.
