Steve Carell is the reluctant therapist to a disturbed serial killer in his new role in psychological thriller, The Patient. There’s going to be a lot for this psychologist to unpack not only with his patient, but with his own challenges as well.

Alan Strauss (Carell) is held prisoner by his patient, Sam Fortner. He has an unusual request for the psychologist. He needs his help to curb his homicidal urges. Alan has to unwind Sam’s troubled mind to stop him from killing again. But while he’s alone in captivity, Alan also has to confront his own repressed troubles, dealing with the recent death of his wife and the painful estrangement from his religious son, Ezra. The therapist discovers just how deep Sam’s compulsion runs, and how much work he has to do to repair the situation with his own family.

The Patient was created, written, and executive produced by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. Caroline Moore and Victor Hsu are also executive producers on the project. Carell is the leading man, and also executive produced.

The upcoming Hulu project is a limited series. The Patient will premiere on Tuesday, Aug. 30 with the first two episodes released on premiere day.

Carell takes on the role of therapist Alan Strauss, Domhnall Gleeson plays serial killer Sam Fortner, Linda Emond will be Sam’s mother Candace, and Andrew Leeds stars as Alan’s estranged son Ezra. Actors Laura Niemi, Alex Rich, and David Alan Grie also round out the cast.

The Patient premieres Tuesday, Aug. 30 with the first two episodes on Hulu.
