Luck cast guide: Who is each actor playing in the movie?
This month, we’re in for a real treat with the arrival of new animation film, Luck! The fantasy comedy will debut globally on Friday, Aug. 5.
The visionaries behind Disney’s Toy Story and The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning are a part of the team for the upcoming Apple TV+ and Skydance Animation movie. The computer-animated movie is directed by Peggy Holmes, who was behind the third The Little Mermaid film. Among its producers is Joh Lasseter, who served as director on Toy Story and Cars.
The film is mostly set in the Land of Luck. It’s a place where animals and creatures work behind the scenes to create all the lucky and unlucky moments that make up our everyday lives. This system works because no human has ever stepped foot there, that is until the unluckiest person in the world, Sam Greenfield, does. As she finds herself in the Land of Luck, she realizes she has to unite the magical creatures there in the hopes of turning her own luck around.

Eva Noblezada as Sam Greenfield
Sam Greenfield is the unluckiest person in the world. When she ages out of foster care, Sam discovers the Land of Luck and embarks on a quest that could change her luck forever.
Broadway star Eva Noblezada made her debut on stage as Kim in a revival of Miss Saigon, and is probably most known for her role as Eurydice in the production of Hadestown on Broadway.
Simon Pegg as Bob
Bob is a lucky black cat from the Land of Luck. He becomes Sam’s partner in the quest to find a lucky penny in hopes of preserving his lucky life.
Simon Pegg currently stars as Benji Dunn in the Mission: Impossible films. You may recognize his voice from three of the Ice Age movies – Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Ice Age: Collision Course, and The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild – as he took on the role of Buck.
Whoopi Goldberg as The Captain
The Captain is the Land of Luck’s head of security. I wonder how she’s going to react when she sees Sam there!
Whoopi Goldberg is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner. Her film breakthrough happened in 1985 with her role as Celie in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple. She is also known for her performances in the Sister Act movies, as well as in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard. Since 2007, she’s taken on co-hosing duties on daytime talk show, The View.
Jane Fonda as The Dragon
The Dragon is the exuberant CEO of Good Luck, and undisputed luckiest ancient being in all the land.
Jane Fonda is known to be a film icon. She gained attention in the 1960s with comedies like Period of Adjustment and Barbarella. She also co-starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in Monster-in-Law, and starred in Netflix’s revival of Grace and Frankie.
Flula Borg as Jeff
Jeff is a larger-than-life facilities engineer who maintains the magical machine that distributes good and bad luck to the human world. The unicorn dreams of one day being reunited with his one true love, The Dragon.
Flula Borg’s acting career includes roles in Pitch Perfect 2 and The Suicide Squad, as well as in a number of television shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Good Place.
Colin O’Donoghue as Gerry
Gerry is a loyal leprechaun who adores his job working with Bob at Arrivals and Departures in the Land of Good Luck. He is always the first to volunteer for any task, bringing good cheer wherever he goes.
Colin O’Donoghue is best known for playing Killian Jones/Captain Hook on ABC’s hit series, Once Upon a Time. The actor has also starred alongside Anthony Hopkins in The Rite, portrayed Gordon Cooper on The Right Stuff, and voiced Douxie in Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters franchise.
Lil Rel Howery as Marv
Marv is the owner of the Flowers & More store where Sam gets her first job. He is upbeat, sharply-dressed, and always ready with an encouraging word for unlucky Sam.
Lil Rel Howery is best known for his role as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer Rod Williams in the horror film, Get Out.
John Ratzenberger as Rootie
Rootie is a bad luck root and the self-appointed mayor of Bad Luck. He runs The Lucky Shot, the one and only Bad Luck watering hole, where he specializes in free advice.
John Ratzenberger is one of the most successful actors in terms of box-office receipts. He became widely known for playing Cliff Clavin in Cheers. He’s voiced multiple animation characters including Hamm in the Toy Story films and Mack in the Cars franchise.
Adelynn Spoon as Hazel
Hazel is Sam’s roommate and best friend at the Summerland Home for Girls. The five-year-old believes that she’ll be adopted by her forever family just as soon as she finds a real lucky penny, which Sam is determined to find for her.
Adelynn Spoon is best recognized for her recurring television roles, including Emma Abar in HBO’s Watchmen. She plays the daughter of Regina King and Yahya Abdul Mateen II in the series.
Luck will debut globally Friday, Aug. 5. on Apple TV+.
