It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the end of Apple TV+’s new psychological thriller, Black Bird. The streamer puts out a lot of great content, but this show really is something else!

The limited series took us into the life of Jimmy Keene after he’s sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison. He’d been living as a wealthy drug dealer before he found the FBI at his door.

Once he’s behind bars he’s given a choice – agree to befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall in a maximum security prison to get a confession out of him on where several young girls’ bodies are buried, or stay right where he is. Jimmy chooses the latter.

With the six-episode season now over, you’re probably wondering if there’s more story to tell.

Has Black Bird been renewed for season 2 on Apple TV+?

There’s been no official word yet from Apple TV+, but there probably won’t be a second season of the mystery thriller. When the series was first announced, the streaming service had it billed as a “limited drama.”

While miniseries’ sometimes do get a second season, I don’t believe that’s going to be the case for Black Bird. That’s because it came to such a good, tied up ending that didn’t hint at more to come.

In the finale, “You Promised,” we see Jimmy getting frustrated with Larry in the hopes of getting a confession out of him. He does, and gets Larry to draw out a map of where his victims’ bodies are buried. But as tensions rise between the two “friends,” Jimmy ultimately blows his cover and the map is lost.

By the end of the episode, we come to a pretty satisfying conclusion. Larry loses his appeal and remains in prison for life, while Jimmy is set free. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Larry’s brother Gary visits him and asks him to confess to the crimes. Larry eventually confesses to 15 murders, but later recants the confessions. None of the burial sites are known.

Jimmy has become a changed man, reunites with his father for five more years before his dad passes away due to a heart attack, starts a successful business career, and continues to help law enforcement in profiling serial killers.

The final few moments show photos of the real Jimmy Keene and Larry Hall before the screen fades to black. The series is an adaptation of the true crime memoir, In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by the real Jimmy Keene – James Keene – and Hillel Levin.

In real life, Hall is still in prison at Federal Correctional Institution Butner Medium II in North Carolina. Like the show depicted at the end, the real Jimmy was released, was able to spend time with his father before his passing, and found success in real estate.
