The Patient age rating: Why is the show rated TV-MA?

The Patient, executive produced and starring Steve Carell, will take Hulu subscribers on a twisted ride starting Tuesday, Aug. 30.

The ten episode limited series thrusts viewers into the middle of a murderer’s crisis. Carell plays Alan Strauss, a therapist who’s kidnapped by his patient and held prisoner. Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson), who wasn’t initially forthcoming about his real reason for seeking treatment, is in desperate need of Alan’s help.

What Alan wasn’t aware of when he accepted Sam’s request to be his patient was that he’d be dealing with a serial killer. He found that out in startling fashion and now must walk the razor’s edge in order to keep himself alive and prevent Sam from killing anyone.

But, as Alan delves deeper into his patient’s past, he’ll also be forced to confront his own. Namely his feelings on his wife’s passing and his estrangement from his religious son. The sessions between Alan and Sam are all about recovery, but it’s recovery under duress and only time will tell if therapy will be enough to keep Sam from committing more murders.

The Patient is an unsettling psychological thriller that’ll have you gripped through its entire run. Given the genre the show is categorized as, it shouldn’t be surprising that the series is rated TV-MA. But, how has this thriller earned that rating? Here’s what we know!

The Patient age rating explained

The series is for mature audiences due to graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, and crude, indecent language. Viewers should also be aware that the graphic violence in The Patient includes scenes with blood and gore. Not to mention, given the fact that Sam is a serial killer, discussions of his murders, his reasons for them, and his desire to kill again will come up in the series.

The Patient premieres its first two episodes on Tuesday, Aug. 30 on Hulu. Subsequent episodes will release every Tuesday until the finale on Oct. 25. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more news and coverage on the show!
