Apple TV+ is taking us into a mind-bending world with its new show, Dark Matter. The sci-fi series is in the works and stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

Dark Matter is based on the book of the same name by author Black Crouch. The novelist will serve as showrunner and writer of the upcoming nine-episode show. Leading man Edgerton will also executive produce. A release date has not been announced yet.

Also joining as EPs are Matt Tolmach, David Manpearl, with Louis Leterrier directing the first four episodes. We don’t have many details yet, but we do have an idea of what to expect!

What is the Apple TV+ series Dark Matter about?

According to Apple TV+, Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken. When Jason Dessen (Edgerton) is abducted one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago, he’s taken into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns into a nightmare when the physicist, professor, and family man tries to return to his reality amid the multiverse of lives he could have lived.

In the complicated maze of mind-bending realities he’s living, he goes on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family to save them from the most terrifying and unbeatable foe imaginable – himself. According to Deadline, Connelly, who recently starred in Top Gun: Maverick, will play Jason’s wife Daniela.

We don’t know yet how closely the series will follow the book, but since the author is the showrunner and writer I bet there will be many similarities. According to Google Books, in the novel, Jason wakes up in another reality where his wife is not his wife and his son was never born. He’s also not an ordinary college physics professor, but a genius who has achieved something remarkable. To get back home he’s forced to confront the darkest parts of himself as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.
