Did you happen to receive a concerning email from Hulu recently? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one, as millions of subscribers all over the world were shocked to find an email that announced a major update that no one saw coming—a price increase.

Here’s everything we know so far about Hulu’s most recent change and how it affects your subscription going forward.

How much is Hulu increasing its prices?

According to Decider, subscribers who use Hulu’s premium plan will have their monthly price increase from $12.99 to $14.99. For those who use the basic plan, this ad-supported plan will increase from $6.99 to $7.99.

When will Hulu increase its prices?

The aforementioned changes won’t take effect until Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, so now’s the best time to jump ship before prices hike once more. But if you’re planning to stay loyal to Hulu, you’re probably dying to know why your favorite platform is moving in this direction.

What caused Hulu’s price increase?

Like many other streaming services, Hulu is always upgrading its lineup with tons of new shows and films you know and love. This keeps their content fresh, which, in turn, makes subscribers happier in the long term.

Still, that happiness comes at a small price to pay, since it does take a great deal of money for the streaming platform to create and acquire popular titles. Unfortunately, all this results in an expensive bill for the site, hence why we also have a few extra coins to put on the table.

Additionally, we assume the increased prices are a result of hundreds of new individuals subscribing each quarter.

While more users mean more money for Hulu, the constant subscriber growth also means more power is needed to ensure the site runs properly and consistently. It also means the site needs more data and privacy protection to avoid hacking, which then requires more employees to keep the user base satisfied with their experience each month.

All this to say, running a well-oiled machine doesn’t come cheap for either party.

Last but not least, as

Forbes

suggests, the recent price hike comes from streamers always being in a tug-of-war regarding which service they should subscribe to for the month. With the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video,

Disney+

, and Apple TV+, Hulu is doing its best to keep up with the constant competition between

streaming services

. However, things are starting to get ugly.

Initially, Hulu seemed to have distanced itself from the streaming wars, as its low monthly prices kept users from fleeing in large numbers. But as time went on, the site realized platforms like Netflix and HBO Max could have relatively high monthly costs and still have millions of satisfied users. And so, with little to no choice, Hulu joined the fray.

Ultimately, there are numerous reasons why prices had to increase. However, we hope that none of these reasons spell disaster for the site’s future. After all, should streaming services like Hulu keep hiking their prices, what’s stopping anyone from returning to cable?
