Bob’s Burgers recap: Ranking the stories in “What About Job?”
Work is a major facet of Bob’s Burgers. No matter what, the Belchers are always working. While it might not always be the entire family, Bob always keeps working.
Even when Bob’s on vacation, he still wants to work and never ends up enjoying things. If there are two characters who make up for it, it has to be Gene and Louise. The two always try to have as much fun as they can.
In particular, Louise is always the one chasing something. Most of the time, her sole focus is money and figuring out how she can make more than anyone else even if she doesn’t end up doing as much work. However, an episode focused on Louise and entitled “What About Job?” is ripe for the taking.
Before getting into the episode, there will be spoilers from Bob’s Burgers episode, “What About Job?” so let’s break it down.
Bob’s Burgers recap: “What About Job?”
“What About Job?” starts with Bob and Linda hearing a noise during the night and they find out Louise broke the sugar bowl in the middle of the night because she was working on her career project. The entire point of the project is to research jobs they would be interested in and Louise can’t think of anything.
Gene starts by sharing his idea with Louise, a wedgie assassin who ends up going after bad guys. However, she ends up going on a revenge quest after her platonic friend/roommate Regular-Sized Rudy is wedgied. She finds out that Millie is behind everything because she wants to be her friend and roommate. Louise eventually defeats Millie in the end which is obviously meant to be a nod to John Wick.
Moving onto Tina’s story, Louise becomes a treasure hunter who decides to teach others how to treasure hunt. Tina explains that she needs to find a new treasure of an unheard Boyz 4 Now single which makes the listener barf along with peeing and pooping their pants upon hearing it.
Louise is able to glean some information from Regular-Sized Rudy and the group travels together to find the single. The group eventually finds the single as it’s been held by Zeke and Jimmy Junior. Ultimately, Louise decides to trick them, and the two end up, exploding. This one is obviously meant to be an Indiana Jones parody.
As for the final story, Bob decides to share his feelings on Louise’s career choice. Basically, he says that even if the restaurant is closed, she decides to go to community college and eventually ends up working in a lab. It’s not much but Louise finally gets a promotion and decides to try and combat the cow infertility crisis.
She goes to Tina to get some help as Tina has some cows and Louise solves the infertility problem despite being hunted by bad guys but in the end, the siblings come back together to re-open the restaurant. The final story is inspired by Children of Men.
Between Louise’s three career storylines, which one is the best?
While not everyone loves anthology episodes, I feel like this was a pretty solid one which is making the list a bit difficult. However, the bottom one for me goes to Tina’s story. While it was a good callback to Indiana Jones, the story didn’t feel as Louise-centric.
For some reason, the additions of all the characters going with her to defeat Jimmy Junior, and Zeke felt a bit much. I will give kudos to the writers for the hilarious Boyz 4 Now callback, though.
Next up is Gene’s story which is based on John Wick. It’s super cool to see Louise living her two different lives and eventually defeating Millie because of it. Plus it was fun to see Millie play the antagonist for Louise again. The addition of Regular-Sized Rudy as her platonic friend/roommate was great, too. The only reason why this one didn’t take the top spot was that it felt a bit rushed.
That means that Bob’s story was my top pick. While I didn’t personally love the movie storyline they pulled from, I adored how this story wrapped up. It was so nice to see the Belcher siblings living their dreams and having their own lives. Each of them was successful in their own right but in the end, the siblings decided to come back together. Maybe it’s just because I’m soft-hearted, but it was just so delightful.
All in all, I didn’t absolutely love this episode but I felt like “WhatAabout Job?” had its moments. As far as Bob’s Burgers episodes go, this one wasn’t very funny but the plotlines were action-packed and a lot of fun. Plus it’s nice to see Louise in the spotlight as the girl can carry an episode all on her own.
