If there’s one thing we never see on Bob’s Burgers, it’s the Belchers taking a break. We can count on one hand how many times they’ve actually been on vacation.

However, in season 13, we’re finally seeing the Belchers take another break. Additionally, we rarely see the Belchers being able to celebrate holidays either. In particular, Labor Day has never been a big day for them.

In fact, historically, Labor Day has been a bad day for the Belchers. Looking back at season 1 of Bob’s Burgers, the show began on Labor Day and started investigating the family serving human meat in the restaurant.

Maybe the tables will finally turn, though as we’re now in season 13. With an episode entitled, “The Reeky Lake Show” there is no telling what will happen to the Belchers on their few and far between vacations.

Here’s what you missed on Bob’s Burgers episode, The Reeky Lake Show

The episode begins with Linda explaining she saw a mom friend and they went on vacation so now Linda wants the Belchers to go on an end-of-summer trip. Later that night, she finds a cabin they’ll stay in for one night and it’s going great until they start looking at some of the “features” aka no TV or electricity. However, Linda is insistent so the kids hatch a plan to take the battery-operated TV.

Once they get there, they find out the lake can give you giardia and the cabin is much smaller and grosser than they imagined. Meanwhile, the kids realize that they actually brought the dead batteries along so they won’t have any TV. Gene turns on an emergency radio and they find out that they’re stuck inside because of a bug infestation. After all of the hijinks, Bob suggests they go home but Linda won’t give in.

Bob eventually goes into the closet with the kids and finds out about the TV but agrees not to tell Linda and he suggests that they take the batteries from the camping lantern. Since they can’t use the grill outside, the Belchers end up having to eat raw veggies but to save them, Louise gets the TV working for her siblings. In the middle of the night, everyone stays up to watch TV aside from Linda who wakes up and catches them. After everything, Linda decides to call the trip quits and agrees that they’ll leave in the morning.

Before they leave, Linda decides to go canoeing alone and falls asleep on the boating platform, not realizing her canoe has sunk. The family agrees to go out to the lake and find her, resulting in them saving her before she has to swim back. The episode ends with Linda apologizing for feeling like the family wasn’t enough and realizing the family is just as close as the others even without the trips.

The Reeky Lake Show is a unique take on a summer story

If there’s one thing Bob’s Burgers will always give us, it’s hijinks. This time was no expectation. In particular, we got to see the Belchers actually take a vacation which is a rarity. Of course, things played out how they did but it made for such a unique take on the usual summer story.

When other shows feature summer or in this case, the end of summer, it’s usually full of fun and family times. While the family times were there, there was a severe lack of fun. It was not for lack of trying, though but somehow, things never worked out. At this point, that might as well be the Belcher family motto.

In the end, though, the Belchers were able to spend time together and Linda realized that her family is perfect no matter what which is something we’ve seen her struggle with in the past. It’s a plot line that never seems to get old but it does get a little bit frustrating to see the Belchers never getting their silver lining. Even so, there were enough heartfelt and funny moments to make a well-balanced episode.

The only gripe I have is that I’d love to see the show explore more with Linda. I feel like sometimes she ends up becoming too engrained in the family and it’d be nice to see her carry an entire storyline on her own. However, that’s just a small complaint as Bob’s Burgers is great regardless.

Bob’s Burgers airs Sundays on Fox at 9/8c.
