The CW has managed to catch lightning in a bottle again! Nearly two decades after the Winchesters first drove through town in that iconic 1967 Chevrolet Impala with the first season of Supernatural, the franchise has returned with a new iteration that captures the heart and spirit of the original series in this fall’s most ambitious and exciting new series.

Via The Winchesterswe’re welcomed back into the world of Supernatural in the show’s first offshoot — an offshoot that has quickly proven to have been well worth the wait.

The new series turns back the hands of time to take viewers back to the early days of John and Mary Winchester, allowing viewers to revisit the two iconic characters’ early days with a look at the adventures that shaped them into the characters we know and love.

Like with Supernatural, the heart of the show is its relationships but through The Winchesters fans get to see a very different relationship than we saw unfold across 15 seasons of Supernatural. While Supernatural was all about the relationship of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester and the lengths the pair would go to protect one another, The Winchesters gets to dive into the romance of John and Mary to explore the pair’s love story in a way that the original series was never able to fully explore.

The Winchesters beautifully tells the love story of John and Mary Winchester, something stars Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger promise won’t come without conflict.

The Winchesters stars tease conflict ahead for John and Mary

Hidden Remote had the chance to catch up with stars Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger during this October’s New York Comic Con and, of course, the conversation naturally included a discussion about the beautiful relationship at the heart of The Winchesters.

Whether you’re a Supernatural Day One who stuck with the flagship series for its 15-season run or a newcomer to the franchise, anyone who has seen the pilot episode of The Winchesters knows how impactful the relationship between John and Mary is to the franchise.

Right out of the gate, the writers do a masterful job of beginning what we know will be an iconic love story between these two characters, and the chemistry between Donnelly and Rodger is unmatched. The characters spark an instant connection within the first episode and quickly develop a “us against the world” type dynamic early on, but just because the pair’s love story kicks off with little conflict doesn’t mean it will be smooth sailing ahead.

"“I really do think it’s a beautiful love story, especially the iteration that we’re doing,” Rodger previewed of John and Mary’s relationship. “It’s like two people against all odds. The thing I’ll tease is good TV means good conflict. I think we’re going to have a lot of these misses."

As is the case in all relationships, communication will be a key factor for the pair and that’s definitely something the pair will struggle with across the season. It’s also something that will allow audiences to really see how the two characters are feeling and has allowed the show to tell their relationship in a truly incredible way.

"“I think, even with the 70s and the time, I feel like communication was definitely harder back in the day. So I feel like it’s really cool because you get to see exactly how the two characters are feeling but then it’s just so real. I think it’s an incredible way of telling [their story],” Donnelly added."
