Matthew Perry hated this ‘annoying’ part about Chandler Bing on Friends
Despite Matthew Perry being forever grateful for his time on Friends, even admitting it might’ve saved his life, there were parts about the sitcom that he felt the need to push back on. Even things about his character Chandler Bing that fans might love.
Perry’s tell-all memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, just hit bookshelves on Nov. 1, and Friends fans cannot stop talking about all of the revelations. From his near-death experiences to his various romances with big-name celebrities, the 53-year-old is not holding anything back. In fact, some might say he’s saying too much (ahem, his comments about Keanu Reeves which he’s since walked back).
Matthew Perry begged Friends producers to change this part about Chandler
One part of the book, according to Variety, might surprise fans of the NBC sitcom, as Perry shares one thing he found very “annoying” about Chandler. According to the actor, he actually came up with the way Chandler emphasizes certain words in a sentence, for example his memorable lines, “Could we BE more white trash?” or “Could I BE more sorry?” Perry says he started doing that as a kid to make people laugh. But it looks like he didn’t think it would become so famous.
When thinking back to his time on Friends, Perry reveals that he ended up begging producers to stop writing his lines like that:
"“That particular cadence — could it be more annoying? — had been so played out that if I had to put the emphasis in the wrong place one more time, I thought I’d explode, so I just went back to saying lines normally, for the most part in season six and then beyond.”"
Perry says he also had to ask to stop putting Chandler in sweater vests, an item of clothing that became a staple in the character’s wardrobe.
This is hardly the only time a cast member of
Friends
pushed back on an idea pitched by writers. As fans know,
many of the actors actually hated
the idea of Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) getting together, though the show went with that storyline anyway. Additionally, Larry Hankin, who played Mr. Heckles,
when they decided to kill off his character.
Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing
includes a handful of stories from
Friends
like this one, so it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a big fan of the series.
