There is a reason why networks air reruns when there’s election coverage. Tuesday’s live TV ratings for Nov. 8 proved that.

Tuesday, Nov. 8 was Election Night in America. It wasn’t surprising that the majority of TV shows took a night off.

ABC, CBS, and NBC all aired news coverage for the election results. For the live TV ratings there, it was always going to be about who would get the most viewers. ABC won in terms of the total audience, but NBC got the demo.

This was a big mid-term election, too. There were predictions of a Red Wave that didn’t happen, and mostly due to Gen Z voters.

The Resident and Monarch down in the live TV ratings

The CW and FOX didn’t air election coverage. Usually when it comes to Election Night, the networks not airing coverage will opt for reruns. That’s exactly what The CW did, with reruns of The Winchesters and Professionals. Both of the shows were pretty steady in the numbers, so this wasn’t a mistake. Could the network have ran new episodes? Honestly, it wasn’t worth the risk.

We just have to look at FOX’s results. The Resident was down 21% in the demo but steady enough in the total audience. The total audience did actually beat CBS’s election coverage, so it wasn’t a major risk. However, the demo being down so much does show why reruns are opted for.

Monarch didn’t fare as bad. It was down 4% in both the demo and total audience. The numbers for this show are lower than The Resident, though, so that 4% could be dangerous. Not everything is going to be renewed by FOX, and we’ve seen with the likes of Prodigal Son and The Gifted that the network doesn’t give a show much of a chance. Hey, just look at Lucifer, which went on for three more seasons after being cancelled by FOX and saved by Netflix.

So, while not a disastrous move, reruns for FOX may have been a little better for the future of the shows.
