Why is Len Goodman leaving Dancing with the Stars?
By Sabrina Reed
Dancing with the Stars season 31 is drawing to a close. Monday, Nov. 14 marked the season’s semifinales where the six remaining couples were narrowed down to four. For the first time, the contestants danced without a central theme and were required to learn two solo routines–a ballroom and Latin performance, respectively.
Viewers expected to see the stars be pushed to their limits. However, there was a surprise in the middle of the show that had nothing to do with them or the high stakes of the night. Before cuing to another dance, Tyra turned to the judges panel so head judge Len Goodman could make an announcement.
It turns out season 31 of Dancing with the Stars will be his last with the program. Goodman has been with the show since it began in June 2005. He’s only missed a couple of seasons during his long tenure. Why has he decided to bid farewell to the dance competition? Here’s what we know!
Why Len Goodman is leaving Dancing with the Stars
Goodman had the following to say during the episode about his departure:
"Whilst we’re all getting excited and looking forward so much to the finale next week, it will also be with a touch of sadness as this will be my last season judging on Dancing with the Stars. I’ve been with the show since it started in 2005 and it has been a huge pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful show. But I’ve decided I’d like to spend more time with my grandchildren and family back in Britain."
The living legend went on to thank his Dancing with the Stars family and expressed that his time on the show has been a wonderful experience for him. Over the course of 17 years, Goodman has seen many of the pro dancers grow in their talent and skill including fellow judge Derek Hough who was once on the receiving end of Goodman’s critiques and praise.
With heartfelt words, Tyra spoke to Goodman’s legacy as the crowd gave him a standing ovation, the judges panel embraced him, and the dancers showed their gratitude for all that he’s brought to their lives from when they were children to their careers as adults.
