The Super Mario Bros. Movie release date and more

Get ready to enter the world of Super Mario Bros. in the form of a movie! Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Nintendo have teamed up to bring to life the iconic video game characters in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The production is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Matthew Fogel wrote the script. This is the third feature film based on the games. In 1986, Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! was created as a Japanese anime. An American live-action movie, Super Mario Bros., was released in 1993.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie release date

The animated film was originally set to be released on Friday, April 7, 2023 in North America on the big screens, and Thursday, April 27, 2023 in Japan. However on Feb. 28, 2023, we got the news that the movie is coming a couple of days earlier for U.S. viewers. I guess we’re all just too excited for Mario!

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will officially make its theatrical debut on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 in the U.S. The release date in Japan got pushed one day, and it will now be shown on Friday, April 28, 2023. It’s not known yet whether the movie will be streaming anywhere following its theatrical debut.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie synopsis

"While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and brother Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi. With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, Mario taps into his own power."

The teaser trailer reveals the King of the Koopas, aka Bowser, face the Penguin King in frankly what’s an unfair fight. The fire-breathing Koopa also finds a star, and Mario somehow finds himself in the fantastical world, and on his way to Mushroom Kingdom. Check it out below:

The official trailer reveals all the characters we’re familiar with, Bowser wanting to take over the world (but knows Mario is in his way), and Peach, Mario, and Toad’s adventure and mission to stop the plumber’s nemesis (including a ride on Rainbow Road!). Check out the video below:
